Is Low-Carb Weight Loss Really Just Water Loss?

Author: Craig Whitley

Any weight loss or diet plan, including low-carb plans like the induction phase of the Atkins Diet will result in water loss during the first week or two. However, one of the real beauties of following a low carbohydrate eating plan is that most of the weight loss than extends beyond the initial induction phase of the diet is really from a drop in fat pounds.

How can this be? Well, when you follow a controlled carbohydrate eating plan like Atkins or the South Beach Diet, your body soon switches from burning carbohydrates (which the diet deprives the body of) to burning fat for energy. In other words, the majority of the weight loss that occurs beyond the initial induction phase is really loss of fat that has been stored in your body.

Contrary to what many skeptics and misinformed persons may report or say, even if your body sheds water during the first few days of a controlled carbohydrate diet plan like the South Beach Diet or Atkins, the body’s water balance soon returns to normal and the weight loss that follows is the depletion of fat pounds. This loss of fat reveals itself to one and all in the form declines in inches (your body measurements) and pounds – regardless which low-carb diet you follow.

Scales Are For Fish, Not Weight Loss

Author: Dr Jeff Banas

Contrary to common belief, your weight is not really the indicator of a weight problem – the actual percentage of body fat is the true indicator. You need to know what percent of you is actually FAT. How are you going to monitor your weight loss if you do not know what percent of your body is fat, before you begin your program?

Let me give you an example on measuring body fat, this is important in understanding weight loss, or should I say FAT LOSS. This is actually what we are trying to lose, right? FAT!

Lets say someone weighs 200 pounds and when we measure their body fat we find out there body fat is 40%

This means that 40% of the members body is made of fat (80 lbs). The other 120 lbs is muscle, bones, organs, water, etc. (everything but fat).

Now any true weight loss program should include some form of strength training customized to their personal abilities (Another reason you need someone who truly understands the whole body and how it works). Because if you can gain some of that muscle mass that we lose with age, our bodies will burn more calories and therefore burn more FAT!

Now it’s a few weeks into the program and this person steps on the scale and they now weigh 198 lbs. They are a little disappointed because they thought they were doing better. Their clothes fit better, they have more energy, and they are feeling better.

But they are still depressed because they only lost a lousy 2 pounds! Right? Are we sure??? We now check their body fat and it is now 36% not 40%. Let’s do a little math.

200 lbs at 40% body fat means that 40% of them is fat, which equals 80 lbs of FAT, and 120 lbs are muscles and everything else (called the lean body mass).

198 lbs at 36% body fat means that 36% of them is fat which equals 71 lbs of FAT, and 125 lbs of lean
body mass.

This person actually lost 9 pounds of FAT (the stuff we are trying to lose) and gained 5 pounds of lean body mass (mostly muscle mass, which is a good thing because this will allow their body to burn more calories!)

You need to measure and focus on PERCENT OF BODY FAT, AND NOT WEIGHT!

But don’t worry, when your body fat goes down, as your body fat decreases so will the numbers on the scale!

Ephedra - Is It Safe And Effective?

Author: Nick Nilsson

Burn fat while you sleep! Eat whatever you want and still lose weight! Don’t suffer through hours of grueling exercise to burn fat!

You’ve probably heard all these phrases before but are the fat burners containing ephedra that these claims are attached to really that effective and are they safe?

The primary ingredient in fat burners is the herb ephedra, also known as ma huang, or it’s manufactured version ephedrine. It has been used in Chinese herbal medicine quite safely and effectively for thousands of years. It is often combined with synthetic or herbal versions of caffeine (e.g. guarana, yerba mate or kola nut) and aspirin (e.g. white willow bark).

But does it burn fat?

The answer to that question is yes. Ephedra does effectively help the body to preferentially burn fat for energy. But, according to medical studies, there can be side effects, some of which are quite serious.

Ephedra works to burn fat through several means.

-Its chemical makeup increases the breakdown of fatty tissue for fuel. -Its stimulatory properties help to increase resting metabolism. This process is known as thermogenesis, which is essentially excess heat production. You body burns more calories simply by producing more body heat. -When ephedra is combined with caffeine and aspirin, it may have appetite suppressant effects. -The nervous system stimulation you get can help you maintain your energy levels, which can aid you in your exercise program.

When used according to instructions and in moderate doses, studies suggest that fat-burning formulas containing ephedra, caffeine and aspirin can be safely and effectively used to SUPPLEMENT a good fat-burning program.

Fat burners should never be used as the sole means to achieve fat loss. A good fat loss program must also address diet and exercise, contrary to the hype you see on television and in print. Anyone who
relies solely on pills to lose fat is usually doomed to regain the lost weight and potentially quite rapidly after they stop taking the pills.

There is a reason for this weight gain. These pills are effective, therefore the person does not necessarily have to change the habits that made them overweight in the first place. When a person discontinues use of ephedra without changing those habits, almost inevitably the weight will come back.

The fat-burning effects of ephedra do not come without a price, however. Ephedra has a number of side effects and should not be taken by people with certain conditions.

Some of these side effects may include: jitteriness, sleeplessness, increased heart rate and blood pressure, anxiety, skin flushing or tingling and nausea.

People who should not take ephedra include those suffering from heart disease, anxiety attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, adrenal disease, thyroid disease or prostate disorders. If you are taking medication for high blood pressure or are taking antidepressants or MAO inhibitors, you should stay away from ephedra. Also, it is not recommended for pregnant women to use this herb.

Now that you know some of the pros and cons of taking ephedra supplements you, along with your doctor, can use this information to help decide whether or not ephedra is right for you.

All Natural Weight Loss Product In The World

Author: Abigail Franks

Ephedra has been in the news lately. While the nutrition supplements in the weight loss industry is claiming the use of Ephedra is a right, the food and drug administration has stepped in to force it off the market!

At issue here is the current situation, where many tasks, nutritional supplements can make wild claims about almost anything and get away with it simply by adding a disclaimer that those claims have not been reviewed or approved by the FDA or other government agency.

We would naturally view with skepticism nor buy a set of wings that claimed we could jump off a building and fly viewing those claims as preposterous. We're only too happy however to ignore the reality offered by this disclaimer. This is because we are so desperate for a solution to our weight control problem we will conveniently ignore a disclaimer with very significant information. This disclaimer is saying that everything said about the products effectiveness and safety has never been verified are validated!

Sure, there's probably loads of testimonials. Testimonials however aren't solid data but opinions by people who may or may not have a vested interest in the product. The point is that we simply do not know if a product is safe or effective simply from testimonials. To hear the Ephedra proponents, there is no other product that comes anywhere close to the effectiveness of this ancient Chinese herb. The claim is that over the course of just a couple of months Ephedra, along with other natural products such as caffeine can help someone lose 5 to 10% of their body weight. For someone 150 pounds, this translates to a 30 pound weight loss or almost one half pound per day over a two month period.

What they don't tell you however is the reason the food and drug administration has been working diligently to remove Ephedra from the market. The reasons this natural herb was removed from the market was due to common complaints of headache, irritability, restlessness, nausea, increased heart rates and vomiting. In extreme cases where high doses of Ephedra was used, an increase in blood pressure, cardio rhythm disorders, strokes, permanent brain damage and even death has been associated with this weight-loss supplement.

So is Ephedra our best hope is a weight-loss product or is it a dangerous substance as claimed by the government? The answer of course is probably someplace in the middle. There's no doubt that this is Chinese herb has been in use, at least in China for centuries. This doesn't make it necessarily safe however, for Americans in our overweight condition and eating habits.

While it appears that Ephedra may actually be a good weight loss supplement, it's clear that it has been subject to abuse which has caused serious physical symptoms and even death. As consumers, we should be wise enough to recognize that just because a product is packaged as natural, or claimed as used for centuries, doesn't make it safe, effective or right for an individual. Words like Natural and Organic Do Not Necessarily Mean Safe or Effective.

In the end, we're left with the reality that only lifestyle changes can truly deliver the results we desire. Only by eating less and exercising more can we expect to gain control of our weight once and for all.

Lose Weight Naturally By Speeding Up Your Metabolism

Author: Fat Loss Centre.com

Increasing the rate of your metabolism is the easiest way to speed up the rate at which you lose weight. There are people that wonder about turning this idea into reality and often don't because they don't think it's really possible. However the fact is it is possible to speed up the metabolism in your body. There are several things that can be done to give your metabolism a boost and this article hopes to go over them so that you can understand what you can do better but first you must actually understand your metabolism.

Metabolism is defined as how much energy you have available to you at any given time through the burning of fat calories, this causes the body to be working all the time. If you are not active then this rate is usually incredibly slow. So here are some things that you can do to boost your metabolism.

*Exercise - When you do some form of exercise such as jumping up and down on a mini trampoline during those two minutes of commercials you can speed up your metabolic rate. The more you do it the more your metabolism will adjust to work faster and after a while this increase will be the normal rate of your metabolism. Any form of exercise involving strength training and cardio will give maximum benefits.

*Walking - Walking on an inclined treadmill that is set at an angle of ten to fifteen degrees or up a hill either one will help with weight loss and the large oxygen deficit that it causes will speed up your metabolism. This oxygen deficit forces the body to burn fat for its energy needs immediately.

*Water - Cold water can give a momentary boost of approximately eight to thirty percent when it is drunk cold.

You should know how many calories you take in during a day's time. You need to know this because you have to figure out how many calories you actually need to make it through your day. An easy way to do this is to take 11 times the amount you weight, 12 if you are more active. This isn't exact but it will be close. Use this figure for one to two weeks then adjust it to fit your weight loss goals and get results.

Eating more often is one of the easiest changes someone can make in their lives. This doesn't mean to eat more literally, it means to have more, smaller meals, and you should eat four to six meals a day as opposed to the three a day you were always taught. This is due to the fact that if the body is without food for a period of more than 3 three hours it will slow the metabolism to protect itself. When you eat at least every three hours the body is constantly breaking down the food and this helps keeps metabolism going and causes it to speed up.

Sleep is essential in speeding up metabolism to loose weight. A regular sleep schedule with at least seven to eight hours a night works best to help in your efforts and make them more effective.

Metabolism is the controlling factor in weight loss and learning to control the rate of metabolism will help with the ability to lose weight. These simple suggestions will make it easier to achieve this.

Good Reasons For Losing Weight

Author: Terry Sandhu

Everyone knows that being overweight is not a healthy place to be at, and you don't have to be agenius to be aware of that. However just knowing this is not a strong enough reason for most people to make a firm commitment to lose weight.

Just by saying that you should lose weight because you are overweight is not a good reason for losing weight. If it was, less people would fail in their attempts.

Weight loss requires motivation and you will get that motivation from your reasons to lose weight. Your focus should not be on how difficult it will be but what the future will hold for you if you don't. Do not just spend a few minutes thinking about it.

Write everything down and read it again and again. Also write down all the benefits that you will get by losing weight. Compare your two lists regularly and it won't be difficult to see which will be the better option.

Your reasons to lose weight should be your own, reasons that are personal to you and not anybody else. Write down all the benefits you can think of regardless how small.

The more reasons you have the more you will be motivated. Here are some good reasons, you can use these and add anymore you can think of. Make copies of your list and pin them up in different rooms in your house.

The major reason for losing weight is your health. However don't just think that you want to be healthier. You need to be specific. When you lose weight you significantly reduce the risk of variousdiseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, bone disorders, joint problems, strokes, heart attacks, and various cancers. Your chances of living longer are significantly increased.

Try to think what your life would be like if one or more of those diseases entered your life. Dosomething about it now before it is too late because it is only a question of when something happens, if you don't.

The next reason for losing weight is how it will affect your life on a daily basis. You will start to have more energy. Carrying excessive weight is a drain on you and your body. It makes you tired more quickly leaving you feeling lethargic and making it difficult to do everyday tasks.

On top of this you will feel better about yourself. When you don't feel rundown and tired you feelhappier. This is good not only for you but for people around you. Nobody wants to be around someone who feels tired and grumpy all the time.
A further reason to lose weight is that it makes you look good. No matter what anyone says, everyone wants to look good and be noticed. When you are aware that people notice you in a positive way it raises your confidence and self esteem.
You feel so much better about yourself when you know you are healthy and fit and know that others are also seeing you in the same way. Unfortunately the opposite is also true. When you don't feel good about yourself your self confidence and self esteem can drop and make you feel even worse.
Once you have got your reasons for losing weight, make a plan. Decide what you are going to cut out of your diet and what you are going to add. Plan your exercise program by picking what exercises you are going to do, and when you are going to do them.
Finally the most important step, which is to commit yourself to follow your plan day after day, and week after week, and the results that you desire will come.

Tips for successful weight loss

Author: Annette Croft

Throughout my childhood and teenage years I watched as my mother tried every fad diet under the sun. I recall one time she ate boiled cabbage and nothing else for a whole week. I felt my mothers¡¯ frustration and misery, however I could not understand why it was so difficult for her to lose weight and keep it off ¨C until that is I became a weight management coach.

For the past two years I have been assisting people to achieve their ideal weight and in this time I have experienced what contributes to a successful weight loss story.

Getting serious

It all starts with you and how serious you are about losing weight. The key to successful weight loss is partly dependent on your level of commitment. How would you rate your seriousness on a scale of 1 ¨C 10 (10 being deadly serious)?

No quick fix

If you have made the commitment to get serious about losing weight then you need to make the commitment to do it safely and effectively. One piece of invaluable advice my own family doctor passed onto me is that slow and steady is always the best option. The longer it takes you to lose weight the less likely you are to put it back on.

Staying motivated

Always keep the end in mind! Write down all of the reasons why you are motivated to lose weight now. Record these reasons on a piece of card that can be kept in your wallet or purse. Each morning and before going to bed remind yourself by reading aloud why you are motivated to lose weight.

Facing challenges

Every day you are likely to face challenges, which can disrupt your focus and get in the way of your weight loss goals. Write down all of the challenges that you know have made losing weight hard for you in the past. This will help you to develop a better strategy this time. Three common challenges are lack of results, boredom and lack of support from spouse, family and friends.

Choosing a weight control program

I recommend choosing a diet / weight control program that offers all of the following for best results: Provides a balanced nutritious program that is safe and effective Support system and regular progress follow-up Teaches you better eating habits Teaches you how to maintain your weight once you have reached your goal weight
