Wesley Medical Center has added its first surgeon to a new multidisciplinary team designed to combat obesity.
Ian Villanueva will practice bariatric surgery as part of the Wesley Surgical Weight Loss Program. He will be a member of a multidisciplinary team that will evaluate patients and offer consultations to see if weight loss surgery is right for them, the hospital says.
"We are excited that Dr. Villanueva will be the first fellowship-trained bariatric surgeon in Wichita, as well as the first in the state of Kansas," said Wesley CEO Hugh Tappan, in a statement. "This service will be a wonderful benefit to patients who have attempted weight loss programs and need alternative treatment."
A Chicago native, Villanueva graduated from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School and completed his general surgery residency training at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He completed additional fellowship training in bariatric and advanced gastrointestinal surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. During his fellowship year, Wesley says, Villanueva was the operating surgeon in more than 350 advanced laparoscopic procedures, 200 of which were laparoscopic bariatric surgeries.
In a statement, Villanueva said he is glad to be coming to Wichita.
"I have found Wichita to be a friendly, welcoming city with a small town's charm as well as big city amenities," he said.
